Exhaust

I have a 2000 Expedition with the 5.4 and was wondering what anybody suggest for a cat back exhaust. I would like it to be loud but nothing to crazy.

The mods right now are a True Flow Intake and Hypertech Max Energy tuner.

My exhaust was still in VGC so I simply had a shop weld in a Magnaflow muffler. I am very happy with the results, and very happy that it still looks stock. It definately turns heads when you get on it. There is some more rumble at all speeds but it isn't annoying at cruise. I have had Flowmasters on other vehicles and never liked the sound. I think the Magnaflow would be a good choice. The Gibsons I have heard sound pretty good too.

Keep in mind that an Expy is like a big box on wheels (unlike a pickup) so you're bound to get a lot of reverb from a louder exhaust. With this in mind I also opted for a mild upgrade (better muffler) as opposed to a complete cat-back system. I suppose another option is some extra sound-deadening material under the carpet. I'd like to hear what others thing about this because i've been told unless you mod. a lot of other things you won't gain a ton with the exhaust alone.

I know they make an electrically controlled "door" so to speak to control back pressure. When you have a near stock truck(like the OP's with an intake and chip), you do not create much back pressure over stock. If you have a giant exhaust system stuck on a stock truck, then there is a loss of sufficient back pressure, which leads to a loss of torque, essentially hurting performance. If you constrict the exhaust too much, then you get excessive pressure which will also hurt performance and drastically raise EGTs(or so I believe). If you plan on building the engine up, a suggest getting one of the back pressure controlling doors on the exhaust you are going to end up getting, this way you can control pressure and correct it as you build up the engine. If you aren't building the engine, I would say do what others did and leave the stock cats/mid pipes and just get a muffler/ h pipe and dual mufflers.

The exhaust piece I was trying to think of is called an electronic cut out. It is like a normal cut out, but can bypass the muffler.
