I just got another 1978 bronco and its got an ignition problem that i just cant figure out. when i turn the key to start position it cranks on the starter like usuall but then when i let of to the run position it still is trying to crank over so that even when the motor is runing the starter is still engaged i have destroyd one starter and a few starter solenoids (wich whatever is the problem is shorting out solenoids) i have also tryed three diferent ignition switches out of my parts trucks and its not that. where should i look next? what else could be the problem?
Thanks
JZ
Problem lies between the ignition switch and the electrical switch at the bottom of the steering column inside the cab. There's a mechanical linkage that gets tied up/broken. Lube the part and Bob's your Uncle.
Noy sure what your problem is, but I recomend removing the starter cable. (at the selinoid) Then you can try it while you touble shoot. (you'll hear the solinoid click and unclick when you let off)
The 78 doesn't have the actuator rod like the later model broncos do. The key is in the dash on the lower right by the ashtray combined with the ignition switch. Do like Helirich is saying to disconnect the battery cable from the starter solenoid and diagnose with a test light/Multimeter. I would check your wiring between the ignition switch if not replace it to make sure that a hot when on wire hasn't been tied into the hot when on start switch wire. Since your truck is so old, who knows what crazy wiring you may find, lord knows I have seen alot in trucks that are old enough to vote and older.
A strange factoid about your model of truck is that you can use a certain windshield washer switch of the 70's Ford cars/trucks to plug into the ignition wire harness. I don't remember if it has to be the standard two speed switch or the intermittent switch that can be plugged directly into the starter harness. I think I saw it in a 4x4 rag once, not sure, but it was claimed that was how a car thief could steal the 70s F-series without a key but with a windshield washer switch.
I guess the reason I mention it is that you can use it to diagnose your issue with the starter switch a little easier.
