Hey guys, Here is the problem. Was driving my truck all week no problems shuts off and starts no prob. Then last night I came to a red light and it just shut off. I had to tow it home and charge the batteries back up when i got home. This morning the engine cranks, all fuses are good, heater element in the fuel bowl is good, Tach moves when cranking, smokes comes out of the stacks. The only other thing I found was I hooked up a tire pressure gauge to the fuel pump and it show 20 psi after a little bit of cranking. I;m thinking its a fuel problem?? Maybe GPR?? What do guys think about it?? Thanks for the input
I would look to the CPS first. I have had them fail and still have the tach move. If that is not the problem try jumping the large terminals on the GPR with and insulated pair of needle nose pliers and some gloves for a minute and crank it. After trying both of these and making sure they are not at fault I would look at the fuel system.
It should still start with 20 psi of fuel pressure.
Plug it in and let the water heat up, and if it starts then, it's a glow plug or relay issue.
Also get a spare CPS anyway, might be it.
If you have smoke coming out, that's a good sign, probably the glow plugs somewhere, but not sure why it shut off in the first place. ???
I did try to bypasss the gpr but noo start still. I figured it was the fuel pump so I just finished installing one. Still no start, but now after trying to start it, it doesn't even turn over. I just hear a loud clicking. I messed up when i put the big nut and the fuel lines back in the fuel pump. I think i might have tigthen it too much and the holes of fuel lines didn't match up the holes in the bolt. So in return I accidently was dry fireing the injectors since even the fuel bowel didn't fill up. Did I do damge to anything with dry frying the injectors?
Are these banjo fittings? If so there is nothing to line up. Fill the fuel bowl with diesel and try again. I believe all you did is fill the system with air so you should not have done any damage to the injectors.
Make sure the batteries are fully charged because it may take awhile to purge out all of the air.
I agree with DZL JIM that the truck should have fired on 20lbs of pressure. I would change the CPS if you haven't already done so.
