well i acidently dropped a piece of aluminum about a half inch long by a quarter inch wide down in the oil drain hole in the head and i need to know if i have to get it out or if it will end up in the pan... its the hole on the very front of the drivers side head at the bottom, right beside the glow plug. since it is aluminum a magnet is out of the question. but im guessin its just a drain hole that goes straight to the pan. as long as nothin can pick up that piece it might not be such a big deal as it will come out with an oil change probably. any advice would be helpful.
I just got off the phone with him. What he told me was that it would go down and sit around the lifter gallery but wouldn't go to the oil pan. He said if it was a bolt or something steel like that he would worry about it but that since it was aluminum and small he wouldn't sweat it. HE would take the gamble.
maybe we are misunderstanding each other but i dont think the hole that it went down leads to the lifters. its the bottom hole on the head the runs down along the outside edge of the block. unless that bottom hole turns and goes up to the lifters. i thought about stickin a funnel in that hole and seein if i could run some oil down through there to see if it would flush it out. but that might only work if that hole goes straight to the pan.
i just used a steel dipstick thats about 20-24 inches long and stuck it down in there and it went all the way down with no force. so it must go straight to the pan. im thinkin i might unbolt the motor tommorow and pull the pan off quick to see if i can find it.
I didn't misunderstand you, but maybe he misunderstood me. He was in a wedding rehearsal when he called me back. IMHO I don't think you'll have problems and neither did he. If you're at the point where you can pull the pan then you might be better off to do that. Better safe than stranded down the road somewhere.
yea... im almost certain it had to go straight to the pan because of the way that dipstick just fell straight down that hole. i dont really wanna pull the pan. but i know that itll bug the hell outa me if i dont even tho it might not hurt anything. i just dont think i could hit the key when i know theres a chunk of metal in there somewhere. i stuck a funnel in that hole and tried flushin it out with oil and couldnt get it. im gonnna look at it today and if its not to big of deal i might lift the motor up and pull the pan quick. unless anyone else has any other suggestions
I literally just got off the phone with my tech again and he suggested pulling the pan if you weren't sure and hadn't fired the motor yet. He says it's not that hard to pull, but then this is coming from a man that does heads in 8 hours--LOL.
im thinkin all i have to do is unbolt the motor mounts and hook the hoist to it and lift it a couple inches and unbolt it. shouldnt take to long. wish i have a borescope tho so i could see it before i do all this.
Dropped a hand pick once when trying to pull o-rings under high pressure oil pump, fell all the way down into the pan. Your aluminum fell all the way through too. Those holes- ford actually recommends covering them up when servicing rocker arms because the pivot ball can fall down into those and end up in the pan. They are just drains for the heads, they don't go anywhere important.
