My 04 Ranger twice has had the fuel gauge stick down around 1/4 tank after I filled it. I just pulled the fuse to it and re installed it and it solves the problem.
If you don't have a mechanical float, or a wire insulation chafing issue, some fuel sending units problems are known to have been caused by using fuel with high sulphur content, that caused corrosion of the fuel sending units contacts.
All that said, Chevron claims that their Techron Concentrate Plus can remove the corrosion & continued use of fuel with Techron in it, like Chevron, Texaco, or CalTex, can prevent return of the corrosion.
