Hello everyone. Been around for a couple of months(in the background) New to posting.
Time for my oil change and thinking of going with Rotella syn. Do I also need to drain the oil rails and suction out the HPOP oil reservoir prior to filling with Rotella Syn? Thanks.
Its not necessary. You can easily empty the HPOP if you'd like though. The drain plug is located under the plastic powerstroke cover. It takes a large allen wrench and you can suck it out with a little vacuum pump. Make sure to fill it back up though or the engine might stall out when you start up after the oil change.
Trevor, thanks for the quick reply. Yea I am going to change the oil in the HPOP reservoir. I was just concerned with with contaminating the syn with what little oil would remain in the oil rails.
suck out the hpop if you want that wont hurt anything but if you drain the oil rails you might get a little air trapped in there and have a rough idle for awhile. youll be fine just doing the hpop the other stuff will get changed again with the next oil change anyway..........
Dug up this article from a quick search.
How many are actually changing the oil reservoir?
I just watched a YouTube video from a diesel mechanic that swears doing a flush/change of the oil reservoir to be a crucial part of injector longevity.
I was amazed at how nasty the oil was that he sucked out.
Definitely doin this on the next oil change.

The hpop oil comes is the same oil thats in the engine so how is changing that oil crucial of longetivity! have to call bs on that one!
If the youtube guy actually knew how the HEUI system worked then he wouldn't be make uneducated movies like that one. Like these guys advised, the oil in the reservoir moves through pretty fast as it feeds the hpop to fire the injectors. Unfortunately since this guy comes up with bad knowledge it gives everyone that knows anything a bad taste for sucking the oil out. I pull it when I do my oil changes, but only because I have the sucker, its easy, and mainly because why leave more dirty oil in the engine than I need to. But, if you don't it won't end up like sludge or anything like that.
I tried it once with the mighty vac I have and it wasn't worth the extra hassle. Plus if you don't top the reservoir back off, the truck will run crappy or even die till it fills back up.
OK...so I watched the video again. He really didn't seem to make reference to the general maintenance of the vehicle, so looking at the sludge he pulled out of the reservoir is more likely due to **** poor maintenance in the first place.
I guess it would be a way of removing as much of the used oil as you can...like flushing the coolant system and tranny instead of dumping JUST the radiator or the tranny pan.
Not sure if you guys have seen the video, but the "theme" was that it would "save" your injectors. I'll listen to guys though, cause it does look like a real PITA.
That oil moves through there faster than you can think. I used to switch between regular and synthetic between the seasons and never drained the HPOP. You'll be OK if you leave it alone.
So some of you change from conventional oil to synthetic depending on season? I live in NE Arkansas and what would you all recomend me to run in my truck. I'm running Rotella 5-40 right now but was thinking about switching to Synthetic on my next change. Is syn. oil really better or not? I don't see extreme cold weather down here......
Synthetic is good to run if it is really cold. Otherwise it doesn't make much of a difference IMO. If you dont see super cold winters then I'd say stick with standard. I run Delo all year around and It's been anywhere down to -1* F where I've been. I used to have trouble cold starting but I'm sure that was just the glow plugs that I just changed out.
