Fixin to replace the stock DMFW with the SMFW conversions that are on the market, I have yet to decide which one, although Luk seems to be a good bet at this point. Questions, Why is a Valeo style flywheel and clutch different than a Luk? Which is better, opinions please, and why would one be significantly more expensive?
the LUK clutch setup has a plastic silencer ring in the hub of the clutch so there is no gear rollover sound coming from the transmission. this makes for a weaker clutch hub. also the springs in the Luk clutch hub are not as strong as the HD valair clutches.
Call Dan at Valair clutch and talk to him about what you want to do with your truck and keep in mind what you might be planning to do in the future. his clutches are fairly cheap and mine have worked GREAT!!!!! some people seem to have experience excessive gear rollover with theirs, but some trucks experience louder gear rollover than others. mine used to be loud, but my tranny guy and Dan told me to just throw in an extra quart of tranny fluid thru the shifter and it should be good. once i did that i could barely hear it at all. My vote obviously goes to Valair clutches. LoL. check out www.valairinc.com to see their clutches and prices. you will also see that they have 2 that say say ceramic button, but the one that has kinda whitish facings is a full kevlar. i would say call Dan @ Val-air though and talk to him about your clutch. He is on vacation til next week so if you want to talk to them this week call up there and talk to Kevin. he knows his stuff and can tell you anything you need to know.
Most of the reason for changing the clutch is pedal effort and having to push the pedal to the floor. Now I only have 160K miles on the truck. Any opinions on why the heavy pedal? Would changing the clutch greatly improve the pedal effort, or is it the master/slave cylinder/fork to blame? A buddy of mine had a Dodge cummins that had like half the pedal effort. Most of the infor I get is the pressure plate is the greatest contributor to pedal effort. Either way I guess its time for a clutch anyway.
These trucks have a stiff pedal, especially with the DMF. I have a full Ferramic from Valair anf it is stiff too. Usually a SMF has less pedal pressure than a DMF. The organics from Valair definately do.
I love my Valair and would have nothing else. Period!
