I have a 00 f150 5.4L V8. i just hit 90000. Over the last 2000 miles a weird noise has occured. When I start the truck it makes a noise coming from the front passenger side of the engine bay. it goes away after about 1 minute or until i drive off an reach about 2000 RPM. you dont hear it while driving just when the trucks been sitting and I go to start it. the noise it makes kind of souds like a diesel truck.. I went to 3 exhaust shops and got 3 different answers from them. 1 said it was manifold gasket, 1 said it was the cat, and the other said it was a lifter.. Im running out of ideas of how to pinpoint this noise...anybody run into this problem or have any encite as to what to do?
You would be fine to switch to synthetic oil at this point but I seriously doubt it will help fix your problem. I would have to say it is one of 3 things. It may be a lifter tick. I have had a lifter tick in my 97 4.6 with 160K miles on it for the last 40k miles. It only does it when cold and does it for about 10 seconds or so. It started doing this running mobil 1 but I have since switched to motorcraft.
It could also be a broken exhause manifold bolt that is causing an exhaust leak until everything warms up and expands closing the gap between the head and the manifold. I have seen this happen on several 4.6 and 5.4's.
My last thought is that it could be piston slap which is very common to these engines and there is really nothing you can do about it and it is not hurting anything.
Hope this helps a litttle.
