ok just bought a 78 f250 custom. It has the 351M 4wheel drive and locking air differentials. The shocks need replacing but I cant tell how much lift it has. There are no blocks under the springs and the shackles havent been extended. Could some one tell me what is the distance from the axel tube to the frame supose to be on a stock one.
You could measure the distance between the mounting points of the shocks and go to the parts store (a decent one not a big chain) and have the counter man help you find some where your measurment is right in the middle of the shocks' travel. The specs on the shocks (mounting type, extended and compressed lengths) are all in the book. This way it wont matter if the truck is lifted or not you get shocks that are appropriate for your truck. If you want to get real technical you could take the shocks off and jack up one end of each axle to max stuff and find the minimum compression distance between the mounts the jack up the frame to achieve max droop and find a shock that matches those numbers. Ooor you could take the existing shocks off and just match them up by measurements or part numbers.
I had the same problem when i bought my truck. It didnt come with any shocks at all and i knew i had alot of lift since the bottom of the body sat level with the top of the 35" tires.
I simply measured the length i needed and made note of how the front and rears were mounted and then googled a breakdown of all the monroe shocks by size and found ones that would work.
I gave a shop the part numbers and they had them that day, $50 a shock, i wasnt going to complain!
