What To Look For

I'm considering the purchase of Ford Ranger or Mazda B-Series late model pickup 1997 through 2002. Would like an 4 cylinder with a manual transmission. Can anyone provide some info on what to look for and/or stay away from on a used truck. Thanks

I used to drive '99 2.3DOHC. runs well, like 3.0, but if you wanna haul look for 3.0 with manual tranny. better lower end torq., and 3.0 is more reliable.

do not purchaise 4.0SOHC with MT5 - no reason and M5oD is week for 4.0SOHC

I have a 93 Ranger with a 2.3L 4-cyl. Great truck, averages about 24mpg city/highway, I have gotten 30mpg on the highway at 60mph. Mine is very reliable never has given me any trouble, good for light hauling. The 4-cyl however is slow as dogdirt. I do not recommend it of you will be doing any heavy hauling or if you want something with power.

I don't think he's looking for something for power. He has his V-10 Excursion for that. He's probably looking for something with a slight improvement in gas mileage...

4.0 SOHC is fast, but.... difficult to maintane and expencive (sufisticated German engeneering), 2.3 is underpowered (IMO) - good to move someone's body, nothing more heavy then bags from supermarket in bed. 3.0 is not a torq. monster, but good compromise. unfortunatly 2.5 and 3.0 duratorq are not available in the USA.... and crew cab are on EU version only....
