I found this one (this is what the ads says)....
"1999 Ford F250 4x4 this is a pretty good running old truck, bed has a dent in both sides, looks to be from a trailer,,3/4 ton auto,,cold air. -its cheaper for a reason, something not quite right, cooler mornings it has to be plugged in to start, but when it fires it runs good,, $4900 make me a offer".
I emailed him to ask (turns out it's a dealer too - so it makes me very leery) and this is his response....
"you have to plug it in to get it to start for probably 15 minutes then it starts just fine the rest of the day,and if you drive it regular its a lot better, the title is good one owner,, according to the title,no it don't drain the batteries it will crank forever,,really hot batteries in it,,no smoke at all.."
What is wrong with this truck?
Is it worth it?
How much will it cost to fix?
Sounds like the Glow plug relay is shot, worst case it needs some glow plugs, either way your looking at less than $50... As for plugging in, sounds like BS to me, never seen a 7.3 that didn't need at least 2 hours plugged in to make a difference, lot of water and steel there to heat!!
$4900 ain't too bad and definately sounds like somebody jack knifed a trailer a time or 2 to dent the box....
Slick
glowplugs and/or glow plug relay. glow plugs are 120 bucks for all 8 and the relay is around 30-40 bucks. could even be burnt pins in the valve cover harnesses, but not likely. go look at it when it's not plugged in. then tell them you wanna test drive it. see how it acts without it plugged in. even w/out glowplugs it should start in over 50* weather, may take some cranking though, but hopefully you gotta plug it in. LoL. them not knowing the problem gives you HUGE amounts of leverage!! just look over the truck real good. check/smell/feel the oil to make sure they didn't put something like gear oil in there(i have seen this at a dealer close to me, if the truck leaks oil they put in gear oil so it won't show the leak). check all fluids. make sure it runs good once started with no knocks or other engine noises that don't sound right. these type of buys can turn into really good buys on your part, but they can also have hidden problems so just look it over REALLY GOOD. i usually take a solid hour looking over a truck before i start it up.
If it sounds to good to be true it probably is but having said that right now they can't hardly give trucks away, especially diesels. Like above it's probably GP's or GPR which isn't that bad once you've dug into it. A good price and he'll take less...ask him what he wants down on it. It sounds silly but having known a used car dealer really well he told me what they want down on a vehicle is what they've got into it. It just gives you more leverage to deal with. You could drive it off the lot for probably 3200....check the blue book on it also.....doesn't sound like a bad deal to me as long as the engine isn't trying to knock it's way out of the frame.
