00 and towing
My question is on if I can run down the Interstate with the OD on or does it always have to be off when towing. It seems that everyone says something different when it comes to OD. So alittle insight would be helpful.
The truck has the ext, 4x4, 5.4 with the tow package. Just serviced the tranny.
Thanks
Doug
You don't want the truck to go for very long with the torque converter unlocked. That is what burns up the tranny.
The reason most say to run w/ overdrive off is that a lot of people can't really tell if the torque converter is locked or not. And with overdrive turned on - if the tranny shifts down to drive - the torque converter will not lock up in drive. It keeps hoping to get back into overdrive and then lock up.
So - watch your tach and listen to the engine and pay attention to the slope of the road. If on flat road or downgrade you won't have a problem. But once you start up a hill - the torque converter may unlock to get a little extra rpms or the tranny may downshift. If that happens, just kick the OD off and the torque converter will lock back up.
Hope that makes sense.
