Rear main leak problem ?

I have a 83 351 W that has the split type rear main seal. I just replaced it and still have a leak somewhere back there. My question is, Was there a problem with this type seal? I always thought they took a "rope" type seal. THe one I got was a rubber type. If anyone has any feedback , please respond. THANKS.

Did you check the clearance of the rear main bearing while it was apart?

NO I didnt check the clearance. Do you mean with plasti gauge ? The bearing was .010 oversized.

Plastigauge would probably be good enough to give you an idea.

What I'm driving at is that if the main bearing is significantly worn, it will be blowing more oil at the seal, in which case a fresh seal may very well not hold.

What was the condition of the bearing and journal? If they both looked like new as they often will if the oil has been kept changed and it never lost oil pressure, then it is probably okay.

Since it is a .010 undersized bearing then there might have been a mismatch at rebuild time, but there again, this would probably be evident in a visibly worn bearing and journal.

rear main leak

When looking at the bearing cap the bearing had a worn spot at about the 4-5 oclock position. looked like the outer coating was worn throoug and i could see the bronze color maybe 3/4 of an inch across the bearing. the journal appeared to be ok. If I pull it apart again, should I put a dial indicator on the seal area to see if the crank is bent? This motor supposedly had just been rebuilt, can see crosshatching in the cylinders. Person said that It hadnt even had an oil change yet. Possibly they knew there was a problem. Dosent matter now , im stuck with a problem. Thanks for the response, please reply if you have any ideas. Thanks
