Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I'm new to the Ford family. I just traded a 1996 Mazda Mx-6 5 speed w/ 177k for a 1994 F250 7.3 (Non-Turbo) w/ 150k. Truck is in pretty good shape. The bed is a little beat up, but nothing I can't deal with. My problems are: the drivers front tire hits the bumper when urning right, the truck seems to surge while driving doen the highway (rpms go up and down, then level out), it died while driving home yesterday (not sure why), and the tranny shifts so hard it feels like a kick in the back.
There is a page here devoted to your engine. If you go on down the main forum page to the diesel section you will see the page for the pre-power stroke diesels. Great guys there.
However the surging problem is usually due to a fuel delivery problem, either air intrusion in the fuel system or weak fuel flow. May also explain the stalling.
The first thing I would do is fit a new fuel filter. Fill the new filter with something like Diesel Kleen before you fit it and toss any left into the fuel tank.
For more info post this on the pre-power stroke page.
As for the trans are your speedo and tach working?

Reason: additional info
The speedo seems to work, but it feels like the truck is running slower than the speedo. The tach works intermitant. If i rev too hard the tach will hang around 4000 rpms. once it shifts and revs over 3000 it will catch up and be on the right rpm.
Your engine is governed to 3400revs so I would think the tach is not reading right.
Look at the front of the engine beside the oil filler cap and you should see a large hex nut with wires coming out of it. That is the tach sensor. Unscrew it, clean it and check closely the condition of the wires. If good replace it and see if it now works.
Your VSS is located on top of the rear end center section. I recently had a problem with mine (incorrect speedo reading) & swapped it out and it works fine. I used a junkyard part, but I'm pretty sure these don't run you more than 40.00 or so. Welcome to the madness, BTW!

No luck with the Engine speed sensor. Still not registering the rpms very often. I cleaned it off but no luck.. i guess i'll try a junk yard and se what i get. Anything else i can check?
