ive got a 65 f100 with the original 240 in it. ive rebuilt the motor, and there isnt a single tick or knock. but there is an exhaust leak. i wanna keep my truck original looking, but i figured a nice sounding original looking truck would b cool. so from what ive heard and seen, if i want my inline to sound good hands down the split manifold will do it? i cant find anywhere that sells them. post me some links. thanks for the help. and if im mistaken about something or anybody has any ideas that will keep my truck looking stock but perform better let me know (maybe some cam recomendations?)
Your cheapest and easiest mod would be to use the factory split manifolds on the newer ford trucks. I believe it is up to 1996. They are a direct bolt on and you still use your 1 barrel intake.
When you take the intake off, I have found it to be worthwhile to have it planed down at a machine shop. It is not expensive. The intake has a tendency to relax and warp when unbolted, so when you re-install it you could get a leak. The ideal thing would be to bolt the intake and exhaust together as if installing and have it planed together to ensure a flush fit.
Right now the junkyards are full of the 92 to 96 trucks due to the cash for clunkers. You could probably even get the complete exhaust to use on your truck minus the cats.
There is more info from knowledgeable guys in the six cylinder engine section. You may want to do a search or ask a question there.
I just bought a 66 with a 240, and I plan to get these as soon as I get more pressing issues resolved. The 240/300 six is the best engine Ford ever made. I spent a year to find mine. Good Luck.
I would say best overall. I do not know of any other engine that with very little modification can handle a 1 barrel for economy, or switch to a 4 barrel, and get as much power. I also don't know of a V8 that will last as long as abused as I have seen a 300. I would love to hear what you think is the best though.
