Is there a way of checking the oil cooler to determine if it is bad or will I have to take it to a shop? If it is bad how hard is it to replace and what am I looking at for cost? I might have to take it to a shop anyways. It is putting out very small amounts of coolant from the overflow bottle like drops sitting around the cap. On my last tow the fan took forever to disengage and it was only about 80degrees that day. This is the first time it ran this much, noramally cycles on and off but this time it just kept running. I am hoping the HG's or EGR cooler are not bad. Just changed my coolant and did not see anything in the fluid. Does not put out any smoke either. I replaced the cap just incase it was that simple but not holding my breathe.
The oil cooler is normally diagnosed as BAD if the engine oil temp runs 15* or more over the engine cooler temp. There are sensors for both if you have something that will read them. If you're under the 5yr/100K mileage warranty then let the dealership do it.
My warranty ran out in June so no luck there. Other than installing guages is there something I can get to measure the temps through the sensors? I plan on keeping this truck for a long time and want to keep it running. Just found threads on coolant filters after I just changed mine. I will have to add that to my to do list now.
the temp gun would give you a inaccurate reading.because its reading surface temp not fluid temp.theres a company that sells just the cooler for your oil cooler.i cant remember the company name.there the company that makes the bullet proof egr cooler.
