302 Identification

I know the the engine in my 1963 F100 came from another vehicle, (i think a mustang) is there any way to identify the engine to get an idea of what year it is from?

Not really unless there is an original tag hanging from one of the intake bolts or sticker on one of the valve covers. You can get some basic info from the casting numbers, the block numbers are down by the starter and the head numbers are on the head gasket side. But those won't tell you much about what vehicle the motor was built for, the cam lift and duration would say more about that than anything.. particularly if it's a later roller motor.

If the tag is missing and it's never been rebuilt with the deck resurfaced, you can at least get the engine assembly date from the small pad at the front of the driver's side of the block, right at the base of the cylinder head:

When these engines were assembled the date code was stamped into this pad. If the deck has been surfaced then the stamping would be removed as this pad is an extension of the deck. Clean it off and look carefully...
