The complete power steering system in my 76 f250 4x4 is trashed, the pump is leaking, the hyd ram is leaking, pretty much the whole system needs to be rebuilt. I heard that it would be cheaper to swap in a power steering system from a 78 f250. Is this practical, any help would be appreciated.
yes, it's easy to go either way. I've rebuilt the system on my highboy, and find the parts easy to come by. When maintained, the system works real well, and has a better feeling than the later style integral power steering.
It's also a better system for off roading, or plowing snow. You get the assist only when you need it, not all the time dead feeling like integral.
It is totally a fair idea to convert to integral if you want less maintenance though, and it isn't too hard.
