>I am going to be doing a full tune up this afternoon. I am going to be doing the Oil, plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets,PCV,air filter, and fuel filter. This is the first time I am going to do this on the truck. I am pretty mechanical but this is my first American truck. I have an 1985 F250 XL with a 460 gas. I am also going to be replacing my pick up coil inside of the distributor- any advice? for whatever reason there were a lot of metal shavings in my distributor cap, does anyone know what that could be caused by? I am also going to be changing my battery cables and starter switch, I think it may be draining my battery. I am really just looking for any advice for electrical. Is there anything I am forgetting to change out? This truck has had so many issues with the electrical system. I have posted many postings about the truck’s electrical so I am pretty sure it’s the pickup coil. My issue is that when the truck gets to normal operating temp and comes to a stop and is idling, it will just shut off! It has to be electrical due to the fact that it shuts off like a switch. I am pretty sure that my pick up coil has something to do with it. If anyone has any idea what would cause metal shavings in my cap that would be nice. Is there anything I need to know about changing the coil out? I mean it’s pretty standard but do I need to have it set in any certain way? I am thinking of just taking it in to have the full electrical harness changed but I keep getting quoted 6 to 7 hundred bucks! Is that normal? I mean it’s a pretty standard truck and not much electrical but I don’t have the proper equipment to do it myself. Has anyone had this done before, and if so how much am I looking to spend? My carb is running a little high as well so I am going to be tweaking with that as well, I was told that the Holly carbs were kind of a pain to mess with. I know where the idol screw is so I am just going to try to turn the idol down but is that going to screw up everything? It’s the stock carb. When I replaced the Duraspark II ignition unit my idol did drop a little, but not much. I know it’s regulated by the unit but if I tune down the carb will that mess up my fuel management? If so, I am going to take it in to be properly tuned. If it’s a matter of a few screw turns, I am going to do it myself. I know I need to let the truck reach the operating idol speed and then lower it then. If anyone has any info on that it would be helpful as well. One last thing, I picked up an ignition switch and I was pretty sure it was under my steering column but when I pulled the column off it wasn’t there. Any ideas??? Thanks, and have a great day. <o

The switch is near the base of the column, there is a rod going from the switch to it.
