I took my truck into the shop yesterday 96 7.3 F250. This si the same shop who replaced my filter and CPS in June. It started acting the same as it was, stalling on the freeway, ect. Originally thay told me the code reader said it was the CPS and covered under warranty.
Replaced it today and said it was having additional trouble and they couldnt read the remainder of the codes and would have to pull the chip. Called at 10 to 5 and said pulled the chip and it runs fine. He said it was a stinger chip, then said it wasnt a banks chip. I searched it on the internet, and the stinger comes up as a banks chip.
Am I being taken for a ride?
I am towing a 9k trailer this weekend to the coast, reasonably flat drive, how bad it having the chip removed going to affect my trip with stock chip.
And finally, if it is the chip, what chip should I buy to replace it next weekend?
I doubt drive time will change enough to consider, but if it runs fine without the chip better to that than risk downtime on the way.
As for chip recommendations DP-Tuner or Tony Wildman. Which is better? The opinions are as varied as the members here. What is agreed is these two men are the BEST with the 7.3. DP -tuner has a web site easily googled tony has a site also but i don't recall currently. Someone will chime in for sure.
I'd drive the truck with the stock chip in it and see if it runs like it should on the highway. Towing the trailer with the stock chip will be fine, just won't have the power it had with the chip. For a new chip you need to check out TW, PHP, or DP. Which ever one you like for the options and price (all three chips are close to the same). Just my 2 cents.
Wifes can be such a pain in the butt, she said just go buy one, thus creating the stress and anxiety of having to decide which one I want.
So I read a thread on DP tuners, it is laced with truck smokes, uncertanty as to if they got the right settings for there injectors ect. So people from all walks of chips and tuners chime in and give me some key points as to what to look for, pro's/cons of different chips!
I had a TW and personally loved it. I recently had a chance to get lived tuned by DP and now run that. Both are absolutely great. To do it again I would probably stay with TW but DP are easier to get in touch with. DP is closer to me too.
Just a decision you will have to make.
I'm actually steering towards DP tuner now. I like the TW chip style better and what not. But DP has dashboard hook up where I can plug in a laptop. And that just appeals to the techy side of me.
I know tony was gone for a while, or whatever it was, and don't know if he is back. I got a strange request for a tune and want to talk to him about it. So might end up with a DP or a PHP instead.
All 3 of them are excellent tuners.
And of course your going to get smoke with a good tuner, your running more fuel!

EXCITING!
I have no doubt that I received the correct tunes, I was just surprised that it smokes at all in economy mode, the overall increased performance and how strong my truck runs is a day and night experience. and as a side note smoke is GOOD
