leaking valve covers

leaking valve covers
My 99 f150 is leaking oil from the valve cover into the #4 spark plug hole and shorting the wire. It looks like a hellacious job to R&R this gasket. Is there anywhere on this forum that gives a little guidance for this job. Such as what to remove, what size bolt heads and any pictures would be helpful. I already discovered some of the valve cover bolts are 8mm and some 12mm. the dealer wants $600 bucks for both sides but right now I only see the passenger side leaking. Any advice would help.

While we could certainly provide a lengthy how to that you could read, I do recommend getting a Chiltons or Haynes manual before you get started. Lots of useful info in there, not terribly expensive. $600 is a reasonable price, and you should do both sides.

OK thanks for the info. but I have to tell you I see absolutely no sign of oil leakage on the driver side and while preventive maintenance is a wonderful thing I also like the wisdom of if it aint broke dont fix it.

While that may be true, Ford engineered the original gaskets to outlast the vehicles 5 engine warranty. If its not leaking now, it soon will be. The gaskets come in sets, so if you just wanted to do one side, you just buy the set, and save the other one till you are ready to do the other side too.

Are you 100% sure it's coming from the gasket?
Before you go taking it apart,,check the rubber grommet that's in the top of the valve cover that the PCV valve goes in.
I had a problem with the grommets rotting and cracking and they were leaking oil.
