What is the proper way to adjust a carb it is on a 1985 f150 4.9l with the stock carter carb i think it is running rich as it diesels and backfires some times when i turn it off ive tried leaning it out little by little but it is just using to much gas.
I thought those carbs had EPA locks on the air mixture screws. They are usually set pretty lean to begin with. Your describing a timeing issue.
If you are sure it is getting way to much fuel. Black spark plugs, or white smoke coming out of the carb after it is shut off, and dieseling is stopped, You might have a hole in yuor float, or a bad needle and seat. Maybe contaminants in you float bowl?? If you just rebuilt it, then double check your float level setting
