Hi... 88K on my 2000 Mazda B2500 and the engine check light came on yesterday. It seems to start and run like it always did (good). I'm thinking of going over to Autozone for the codes but I would like to buy a code reader for the future. There are a number of them out there and I need a recommendation from the experienced for a good but reasonably priced reader. 2.5 4 cycl..
IHMO. Simple readers read DTC only and you will find description in internet (P0301I and that's all). advanced scanner decode and you'll get "P0301 - cyl #1 missfire".
Suffisticated scanners read engine data, actual values, they can do some engine tests, like compression test.
next level - vehicle - computer interface, that lets you use computer programm to diagnose electronic systems.
Better step - made by actia ore bosh universal scanners, KTM550 for example - does a lot.
But the best for vehicle diagnostics - used by dealers genue Ford scanner - FORD VCM TOOL. You can reprogramm engine ore tranny unit, retrofit new PCM, programm immo keys....
So what scanner to use? I suggest simple one, made in China, will be the best for you
