Coolant flush

I saw this procedure on another forum:

</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <!-- / user info --> <!-- message, attachments, sig --> <!-- message --> Wow... I am shocked.... Ford makes a great coolant that works, will not void one's warrenty, is readily available at any Ford dealer and when used with distiled water gives you all the protection one needs.

Why spend more time and money using something else???????

Here is what you do.... (I do it every 50,000 miles just becuase it is fun to do and I am **** about my maintanence).

1) Buy 4 galons of Ford Premium Gold coolant at dealer

2) Buy 15 gallons of distilled water at local grocery store.

3) Drop lower radiator hose until empty.

4) Reconnect hose and add distilled water to degas bottle until full.

5) Drive truck until temp guage goes to normal and thermostat opens.

6) Repeat steps #3 through #5 no less than 4 or 5 times (depends on distilled water amaount used) - I can't remember?

7) You now have 100% distilled water in your system.

8) Drop lower hose 1 last time, drain and reconnect.

9) Look in manual for your system capacity and for a 50/50% refill of coolant just add the coolant straight into your degas bottle up to the amount that equals a 50/50% concentration.

10) Start motor and add distilled water to bring system level to the MIN mark on degas bottle.

11) Drive truck around to open thermostat and let cool 1 or twice to purge any air. May need to add more distilled water (don't add coolant)... but when done you have flushed your entire system and have a perfect 50/50% concentration of coolant and distilled water!!!!

The dealer only uses tap water and so does most other places... distilled is best in order to keep the minerals out of your system.

Good luck.....

Quick, simple and can be done in about 90 minutes!!!!!

I have a couple questions:......when i fill degas bottle with water i just pour it in the degas bottle cap...til it comes to min mark on my 07 right?.....one more question, when i get to step 9, it says refer to manual to find mixing ratio.....do i put coolant in first then start truck and add water????....and exacty how much coolant and water do i have to add to get it right???...these directions seem vague...

I am in the process of doing mine right now and I put in all 3 gallons of water which puts it above the min line. The system eventually works the air out and it goes below the line. The cooling system capacity is 27.5 quarts (6.875 gallons), so you will need to put in 13.75 quarts (3.4375 gallons) of coolant to get to a 50/50 mix. If you need to top it off, you will be adding distilled water. Make more sense?

I would put the 13.75 qts. of coolant 1st. That way any addition is distilled water only. Just seems more simple to me.

If you've added a coolant filter to your system, don't forget to add the increased volume introduced by the filter and lines to the total system volume when calculating needed coolant for a 50/50 mix. It's not much, right around a quart if I remember correctly, but every little bit helps.

Also agree with 69cj, add the needed amount of coolant first then top off with distilled water.

Your welcome... the procedure that you posted above is the one I developed and posted on-line.

By the way... I flush my cooling systemn every 50,000 miles and NOT the 100,000 miles Ford states.

As well... no amount of flushing removes the sediment in our motors... so I would look at the dieselsite.com coolant filter set-up and install it after you have flushed your system and before you add new coolant.

Only when the motor is up to temp and pressured... will the sediment work itself loose and get collected in the coolant filter... again... flushing does not accomplish this!!!

By the way.. the pictures posted at dieselsite.com (in the 6.0L section) is my system and photos of what their filter gets out of our motors!!! This is the best mod anyone can buy if they wish to keep their truck for a long time.... and avoid costly repairs to the oil and EGR coolers!!!!!

Good luck,
