I'm trying to get my truck ready for the winter and am finally ready to tackle and issue that's been plaguing for a while. It's a 93 F150 302. When I lock the hubs (Warn aftermarket hubs), and put it in 4x4, it drives just fine. The issue is when I take it back into 4x2 (leaving the hubs locked of course), the truck becomes undrivable: it pulls hard to the right and drives very roughly, I can't take it over 30mph or so. If I stop the car and put it in Park then back in drive it drives normal again. There are no issues driving normally with the hubs engaged, it's only after I drive in 4x4 and then put it back in 4x2. Any ideas?
do you go in reverse for a few feet. I was always told once you put it back into 2 wheel drive back up five feet to disengage the front axle. I dont know if its true or not but i have always done it and so far no issues.
Is your t-case lever shifted or electronically shifted?
It's lever shifted.

I don't think I've tried that, it seems to go back to being driveable after stopping and putting it in park, it's almost like something gets in a bind and has to unbind. It started doing this two winters ago, prior to that it would go in and out of 4x4 with no problems at all.
You need to check the u-joints up front, all of them. Sounds like you might have a froze up joint in the center, the middle one for the TTB system, and maybe the one in behind the right front wheel too.
Solid frozen or severely stiff u joint/s make it tend to hang up and not unlock as readily as it should.
Myself I'd pull it all apart and replace all wear items. U-joints, all seals and redo the brakes. If a frozen joint is found replace the inner spindle bearing on that side and maybe the wheel bearings as well.
If the center u-joint is froze up check the inner stub axle shaft bearings, a seal leak, a bad one, at that location would tend to indicate excessive play in those bearings and they should be replaced with the seal.
If it is and you're lucky you might have the externally retained stub shaft, doubt it but you might get lucky. If so it will have bolts at the corners of the retainer around the shaft where it exits the third member.
