i have a 1991 f-350 with the 7.3 diesel i just recently put a utility bed on the truck. After i put the utility bed on the truck the transmission is kicking in and out of over drive bad. The overdrive button in the truck is not working can anyone tell me if there is another way to turn the overdrive off
Consider that the additional weight of the utility bed may be impacting the shift logic of the computer. Have you tried resetting the computer via the battery disconnection method? When you say the OD button is not working do you mean that pressing it does not allow you to lockout the overdrive? Is your speedometer working properly? Perhaps the speed sensor (from the rear axle) was damaged during the bed install.
yes when i press the OD button in the truck it fails to lock out overdrive. i have tried the disconnecting the battery method and it did not work. and yes the speedometer is working fine. and can you tell me where the speed sensor is on the rear axle. also there is one thing i forgot to tell in the first thread is that i changed the transmission fluid and filter while i had the bed off.
The speed sensor connection is located on top of the differential housing of the rear axle. It senses the speed of a ring (attached to the ring gear) with magnetic sections and sends the signal to the ECM.
Have you tried disconnecting the wiring that is attached to the OD lockout switch? Not that you would want to permanently deprive yourself of overdrive, but this may be diagnostically helpful.
You note now that you changed fluid & filter while swapping out to your utility bed. It is highly likely that a connection (electrical or hydraulic) may have been compromised during this operation. On a truck of this age, electrical connections probably have some degree of corrosion. Disconnect any electrical connectors, clean (wirebrush or sand) all terminals, and reassemble using an appropriate dielectric grease to help prevent re-corrosion.
