Drive it Lisa. Don't fix what ain't broke. I have had an annoying harmonic, drone or whatever it is for some years now. I have yet to pin it down though it is minor and only happens at a set speed. Note how I said for years. Even before modding. Fix broke stuff, look for others, otherwise drive it unless it is not drivable. When it gets really bad, you will be able to find it. Otherwise, these trucks don't fall apart that quick. They are built fairly well.
Just wondering if you ever got that vibration figured out Lisa, I have been noticing this problem forever and you're right, it only happens when the truck is totally gunned. I am on a superchip 110 hp right now but ordered the DP F5 two days ago and would sure hate to blow out a tranny with the new power. thanks for your input whoever reads this.
Unfortunately I haven't. I did some visual inspection of various driveline components, driveshaft, u joints, balljoints, couldn't see anything wrong with the truck. Tranny seems fine...shifts fine, fluid level is good. Thought about taking it to my mechanic buddy here in town to put it on the lift and see if we could learn anything new. If I ever find anything I'll let you know.
Lisa, did you ever have the tires rebalanced? alot of times if you feel it in the steering wheel-- its front axle/tire wheel kinda stuff. if you feel it in the seat on your pants, its drive train. I would suspect tire imbalance, possible a bad belt in a tire causing a squirming tread (ie:wobble), or possible a miss-torqued wheel. Had a car once that had a wheel wobble. drove it from Idaho to Vegas, on the way back it got so bad I was sure it had a bad tire. stopped in the middle of the high desert to check and found a LOOSE wheel. did a nascar pitstop right there. retorqued all 4 wheels.
Just had my vibration fixed in my truck lisa ! I did what Mike suggested ! I couldn't figure it out for a couple of years actually. I drove it until it broke ! Driveshaft !!!!! The splines in the slip joint were worn out and finally gave in. Sent my driveshaft away on monday and had new splines welded on and balanced ! Total rebuild done to the shaft ! $460 later and the truck runs very smooth as of yesterday when I put the shaft back in ! The guys at the shop said they have never seen one in so bad of condition ! That's when I told them I had to drive it until something broke to find my vibration !
Barney I have some serious doubts about the tire balance issue. I got new tires/wheels last spring, they came straight from Discount direct perfectly balanced. Before those, I had some crap tires/wheels and this vibration hadn't surfaced until after the new tires/wheels. I feel it in the floorboards, not the steering wheel, if that makes sense. Vibration only lasts for a split second under hard acceleration. At high speeds cruising on the highway it is non-existent. Sometime this Spring I'll have everything rebalanced. Here in Cedar Rapids shops don't accommodate the larger tires, so when I get back to Denver I'll take it down and have it done.
Russ, that's interesting. I turned the driveshaft by hand, and obviously didn't see anything wrong, but then again I am no driveshaft health professional. I can just see that's nothing torn up and that it's spinning fine...that's a case where I'd pretty much have to wait for it to break to fix...lol
OK Lisa, I thought you felt it in the wheel. Has anyone pulled the drive shaft? A frozen/seizing ujoint can do what you are describing. the only way to find it is to pull the shaft and check the joints for smooth movement.
Barney its one of those things that's hard to put my finger on..if you know what I mean? It doesn't do it every time, even then it only lasts a few seconds...its there but its slight/quick enough that I wonder if its all in my head...I just know its new and wasn't there before.
x2 on the u joints. I think that's a project for me for warmer weather. Whether or not its the culprit, with almost 200k on the truck it needs done.

When you start messin with the drive shaft, remember wheel chocks!!! It could be as simple as the shaft slip joint needing grease. As it seems to be happening on straightaways vs. corners it probably is not a limited slip rear end issue. Ball joints usually produce more of a floorboard thump and less of a shudder. Best of luck to ya.
