I have an 89 F-150 5.0 and it currently wont start. I drove it home from worked and there were no issues. i got in it to leave an hour after work and the battery died the instant i turned the key- didnt even turn over. battery, alternator and starter are all new and checked. when i hook up cables to the battery, it holds a charge with the key on, but as soon as the key is turned to start the truck, the battery instantly drains. i can hear a clicking noise near the firewall (coil?) when i bypass the starter from the solenoid. any thoughts? thanks.
A battery can NOT "instantly drains" as you put it. You're not describing the problem suscinctly. Be more exact with your explaination if you expect to get help. Do you know how to measure parasitic draw or do Voltage Drops tests. This is your starting point and explain the symptom better. How do you know it "instantly drains"? Are you watching your DVOM as someone else turns the key for you? Where is your DVOM hooked up when it "instantly drains". Do you have high resistance, corrosion, cold solder joint or bad crimp connection? Check for this stuff then repost with more detail.

I'd check the connections at the battery and where the positive cable hooks to the starter and where the negative cable hits the block. Take each off, sand them, and put them back on. If it's still acting up, replace the cables. If that doesn't fix it, you may need to replace the starter. My truck did this and even though the starter tested good at autozone, I couldn't make it start until I replaced the starter.
