My 48 ford F3's 6volt alternator is now "seized" for lack of a better term. Is this something I can rebuild or is it wiser to send out the core? And if I send out the core - who does a good job out there? Is it possible that someone local can rebuild the alternator?
Before it went I had a great rattle up front of the engine. I was hoping it wasn't under the valve cover - guess it was the alternator rattling ... then seizing.
I would try to have it rebuilt locally. Check yellow pages for " Auto Electrical" or similar........or Google search it but include your zipcode. If all fails, check Hemmings motor news under "services". If you trade it in as a core on a "new" one, likely the one you get back will be made in china........btw, are you running this on a flathead? I'm thinking of going this route and was wondering how well it works? T/M
Well, first it's probably a generator. And depending on the damage, they can usually be rebuilt, but the question is whether or not it is dmamged to a point where it would be better to just get a rebuilt on from NAPA (if they are available) or a like place. I owuld be tempted to porbably get a replacement.
Took it out today and opened it up. Bearings came rolling out. I think I can replace easy enough with new bearings and some grease. Toughest part will be to get the nut off the end but with a vice it should work. It's worth a try anyways.
The old "daddy truck" is all original down to the dirt and rust from the past 61 years. A lot of fun to drive. Brushed on rustoleum, pressure treated stakes, 6volt, 19.5 inch 8 lug wheels etc....
