my 1996 f150 4.9L I6 has starting problems, no spark....will the batter ground being bad (as in my friend touched it and it came apart) cause that? Also my friend put his OBD II comp on to it and it said it was at 6000 RPM...with the truck off. I know a bad ground can screw alot of things up....also he turned the power dist. box upside down....put it back then used jumper calbes for a ground....started the truck up it ran fine. Then i started it and it started smoking from the fuse box area....any ideas? I flipped it back over and nothing looks burnt/melted

My truck is weird....turn the key engine light turns on....then the pump will turn on off on off....and itll start so i assume its doing the same with spark seeing as it has no spark from the coil when this happens. But when the pump turns on the engine light goes out...could this be my PCM?
Also if i tap the run relay with a screwdriver while the truck is running the engine will kind of rev....maybe all this could be due to a bad connection between the relay and the power dist. box? Its a new relay and the wires arent loose.
all of your grounds are bad, and it is trying to pick up ground from where ever it can. you better get the grounds fixed before you fry the alternator, or the computer
my 89 was. you have 1 for the computer on inside drivers fender. 1 for fuel pumps behind drivers head light, inside core support. 1 for eec by battery, 1 for block to firewall, and 1 for winshield wipers. not to mention several frame to cab. I also added a 10 guage wire from the neg post to the bolt that holds in the radiator to the core support.
No fixing the main ground did not help....its a weird situation....engine light came on though, hoping it threw a code other than it stalling...doubt it though. You sure it doesnt have anything to do with the run relay, cause if i unplug that it acts like it does when the relays in and its taking one of its no start fits....just dont hear the pump initially kick on.
when you turn your key you should hear your fuel pump go on for a couple seconds priming the system. If you dont hear that then yes I would check the relay and all your fuses.
battery cables were fine, it doesnt smoke anymore....nothing looks burnt...yes i hear the pumps kick on...but as i said sometimes they go on and off on off on off....then it will start....however when it doesnt start theres also a spark issue
pull the connectors off the fuel, and eec relays, and clean them good, use contact cleaner, they may be corroded, and definately work on the grounds. if it still does it, you may need a new modual, its on the drivers fender on yours. you are not going to get any codes at this point, from haveing the battery un hooked, you have to go through 60 key cycles before the computer re learns .
