Don't I have to cut the "middle" out of my grill to install this? If so, what's the best way to do it? Or should I avoid inserts and overlays? All advice welcomed.
Thank you.
I did a Stull insert. It was one-piece underneath all three openings in the main grille which bolted to the core support and the stock grille (with the gray painted lattice removed) fastens over it. I used an air die grinder and screw-on abrasive discs to remove the lattice portions. You use the edge of the disc to get the plastic hot, then it cuts like butter and you can go back and clean up the rough edges with the sanding surface I think that I recall that the Excursion and the F-series grilles are slightly different...check with the vendor and verify that these inserts will work with a pickup grille too.
Can't trust the vender for a good answer. I emailed them once to ask if it was an insert or overlay. Their answer (in broken english) was that it was direct OEM replacement, remove mine, install theirs. So I'm sure their not going to know correct application. If you notice, they've only sold about 20 items on EBay so far, must be a brand new start-up. Thanks for the advice though, now I at east have a good idea what it entails.
The f series and X are the same for the 00-04 years for the front end, grill included. Just a few differences in the back doors, a few others. In fact we use many of the parts from the f series trucks when we upgrade. Mirrors, rear diff covers, seats, centre consoles, springs etc.
As I recall my grill, and I only had the little sides out, they are clipped in. Little plastic tabs on the sides of the inserts that hold those in. The middle I have not really looked at. I once thought of customizing my grill in stainless mesh, but have come to realize the aftermarket inserts would be easier and cheaper in the end. Good luck.
