Might sound like kind of an odd request. I am looking to get a hitch insert to just leave in the back of my truck (protection from those idiots that like to get too damn close to me in parking lot). Obviously over time it will start rusting in there. I am looking for any ideas like a grease or lube or something that won't retain water (accelerate rust) and will prevent the insert from rusting to the factory bumper hitch over the next 10 years.
these hitches rust instantly. Not to the point of being stuck, however i just painted the hitch and left the reciever in for like 2 days and rust already started to form. Maybe getting one of stainless steel will help
It isn't being a jerk. I see at least one set of bumpers kissing in my work parking lot everyday because of careless drivers. Why do I want a scratched up bumper because of morons.
I did just buy a stainless one, seems to work fine. . .looks good too.
I had one rust in to the point that a BFH wouldn't even take it out. I ended up just strapping up to a stuck vehicle with it, then pulling the pin. Popped right out, but surprised my friend because I didn't forewarn him--he thought something had broken.

Put a lock on it, masterlock makes a nice combo kit for the receiver and trailer. On the lock itself if you are planning on leaving it there forever, I would fill the pin part and key part with lube if you live in a salted road state.

Thanks for all your help
wheel bearing grease, same as we put on the 5th wheel plates on tractor trailers, WD hitches, etc.
slide the hitch out once a year and slap some wheel bearing grease on it and put it back in. Done.
You mitght try beeswax, cheapest source is the old toilet stool seal wax seals. Take the adaptor out and heat it with a propane torch and then slide the seal along it to get a good coating as it melts. after it has cooled reinstall. I left mine in a couple of months and ended up using my farm tractor to tug it out, it was not lubed in anyway.
With people freaking out about the "new" law of leaving the hitch in. why don't you look into one of the step inserts (looks like a little nerf bar), lock the in and use what ever type of water resistant grease you want. just take it out and re-grease from time to time.
