while trouble shooting my noise in what I thought was the rear, I removed the rear drive shaft, locked the front hubs and attemted to drive my bronco out of the garage. no dice, with the transfercaser in 4hi or 4lo, all i got was a cliucking noise, the front drive shaft was spinning. I'm thinking my hubs are junk, waht do you all think?
"When the transfer case is to be shifted into the position for driving the front axle, the pointer on the center bar of the hub must point to the pointer over the word LOCK on the Hub Lock Cap. If the clutch teeth do not engage with the **** turned to this position, the clutch teeth are butted and a slight movement of the wheel in either direction will complete the lock. The front axle will now drive the wheels. Do not operate the four-wheel drive with the hubs disengaged."
That's from my 1990 Truck Service Manual, if you're lucky that's what your problem is.
Your hubs aren't turned in. If they are, I'll continue looking for a solution to your problem. I've solved about all the problems with my bronco, other than it's a POS, Looks like a POS, runs great. Just tightened up the transmission pan that was leaking.
I just checked the pointer on the hubs are pointed at "locked" on both side. I rocked the bronco a little, while watching the front shaft, the front shaft did not move.
rolling the truck back anbd forth watching the axle shafts they turn with the wheel. whith the transfer case in four wheel drive, and the truck running and in drive, the drive shaft and left (drivers side) axle shaft spin. Looks like I will be ordering new lock out hubs this afternoon.
