ESP, looking forward?
I am quickly approaching the end of my 36/36,000 Warrranty on the F-250 V-10. I now find myself in a postion I don't ever recall being in...or at least not for a very, very long time. Owning a vehicle that is out of warranty. The question is: do I purchase a Ford ESP extended warranty? Or face the future without coverage, and Discover the possibilties...you know the speal, use the Discover Card and pay as you go.
There are a number of items that would be covered under some of the plans that I don't have a need for. Being the truck is an XL, I don't need coverage for power windows, locks, seats, keyless and all that other fufu stuff. Seeing as the transmission is a manual 6-speed there is another area that extends coverage to items that don't apply, and I don't believe that the clutch is a covered item under any of the plans.
ON the other hand, if I had to have any major A/C repairs done, an alternator or two, manifold, intake and so forth, then the plan would pay for itself.
So what is your imput...Pay Ahead with ESP or Pay As You Go and Discover the way.
My $.02:
Are you comfortable doing most minor repairs yourself? Even if you are not, I bet a neighbor or friend would be glad to turn a wrench with you for pizza and beer. I know I love helping my neighbors with this stuff.
Aftermarket parts can be much less expensive than going to a dealer. Many times you can buy the parts AND the tools to do the job for the price of OEM parts. Now you have the tools without paying cash for the labor.

Don't let the price or the size of the parts scare you away from doing the job yourself. With the right tools, sometimes a seemingly major repair can be done if you can follow a repair manual of some sort.
What are the chances a major repair will have to be done during the ESP period? The expensive parts (engines & transmissions) of these trucks are very reliable and IMO will outlast any ESP.
In short, if you can do the work yourself, then no ESP.
Thanks for listening,

The plan would be extend coverage for 84 months or 100,000 miles which ever comes first. This is based from the inservice date of the vehicle which was around 30 months ago, and the truck now has 35,000 miles on it. The cost, around $1,600 for a zero deductible.
I am aware that these plans are a money maker for Ford Motor. I also know that having one of these ESP plans does not take the place of regular maintance. It is more like a
major catistrophic medical plan.
Yet, given the history of the V-10 3Vmotor mated to the 6-speed manual transmission, if given basic maintance and care, it should deliver an easy 200,000 miles of service.
I guess I am becoming more focused on what a major A/C problem could cost (A/C is nice to have in Texas) and or front suspension parts replacements (farm/ranch/county roads can be rough on a suspension).
On the other hand, I didn't pay but around $14,000 for the truck new.

I have worked with him on OEM parts before...and he has always been lower than my local dealers. He might be able to offer the quote for less...and it is FORD ESP, so it will work at any FORD Authorized Dealer. Just make sure you tell him it was FTE that pointed you to him. Here is a link...
