starting trouble

well i came back to my van after about a week gone, and no juice at all. checked the rear dome light and realized i left the switch "on" rather than "door". so i hook up my jumper and all i can get are the fast "machine gun" sounds which i assume is the starter. i tapped on it with a screwdriver to no avail. do i just need to let the battery charge up since it was completely dead?

Yes you do not have enough power yet, that is what the "machine gun" sounds tell you.
