Ok, first off I have an 85 f250 4x4 with a 4speed. Today while driving down the city street at 45, my speedo deceided to go funky and read 85mph in 3rd gear. I thought that I may have a problem with the driven gear, so I took it out. It was ok, but when I stuck my finger in the hole to the drive gear, I could spin it freely with out even turning the drive shaft. Question is, how do I get to the drive gear and what holds it from turning? Looks like I have to un do the u bolt and take Off the nut holding the yolk on. Is it behind the oil seal, or do I have to split the transfer case. The nose cone does not come off like some transfer cases that I have seen. How do I stop the gear from spinning, or do I need to buy a new one? Are they expensive. Thanks
I had a spedo chew up a gear, and I made a post similiar to yours about 6 weeks ago and I did not get a response either.
I had a mechanic try to get the transfer case off, and he could not get it off. He said the bearing on the lay shaft was chewed up.
He left the spedo gear hanging by the cable and all my noise went away. I have been using the truck, but I know it has to be repaired. I'm wondering if there is some kind of a retaining ring somewhere in the transfer case. If you find out anything please let me know.
good luck.
Well I tore it apart tonight. Real easy! Un bolt the U joint from the yolk and drop the drive shaft down. Next take an 1 1/8 socket and impact (if you have one) and take the nut off the yolk and then pull the yolk off the output shaft. Next take out the speedo cable and driven gear and then take the oil seal out of the output shaft cone. The drive gear is right behind the oil seal. Your drive gear just slips off of the shaft (it is like a sleeve)! You can do it in less than half an hour.
Ok, my mechanic did all that, and it would not come apart. I guess there is a bearing in there that is all chewed up. my problem is, the transfer case will not come off. he pried, pulled and used a slide hammer and only got it back half an inch. I think I am in trouble. I bought a 92 transmission, but its 1 foot too short, and does not have a provision for an emergency brake. I lookied all over this area and could not find a transmission like mine. A transmission shop in El Paso wanted 2700.00 to fix mine. The truck is not worth that.
Why do you have to take off the transfer case? The speedo gear is in the rear where the drive shaft is. UM... One of my buddies have a different style of transfer case than mine, and he said on his you have to pull out the Yolk, and then take out the bolts on the Output shaft nose cone and take the nose cone off. Then your speedo gear is there, but he said that you have to take off a keeper ring and then push back on the speedo gear and turn it ?180 degrees? and then it should pull off. He said that it is held on by a detent ball, But I am not sure what that meant.
my truck is a 91 superduty 2 wd. It uses a
4wd transmission and the transfer case is for a PTO. my spedo gear bolts into the transfer case. Its all chewed up and was making all kinds of grinding noise, so I know there is a lot of debris inside the transfer case. There must be tons of variations on this transmission.
I will have a go at it in a few days.
My speedo gear also bolted in to the case, but to access the speedo drive gear(inside the trans case) that runs the speedo driven gear(the one on the cable), you need to take off the yolk, and then the oil seal behind it. Then reach in and slide the speedo drive gear off. That is all that is in there. Way in behind the drive gear is a bearing(for the output shaft), but to get to it you must take apart the transfer case.
