I've just finished a 20 min. break-in at 2000 rpm using Joe Gibbs Break-In Oil. This is in a freshly rebuilt 429 by the way. It has a flat tappet cam with old-style rockers. What do you recommend for the next stage of oils? I do want an oil high in zddp, right?
valvoline racing oil has high zddp content. I use Comp Cams break in lube added to the Valvoline racing oil for break in, then switch to just Valvoline racing oil after that.
My engine builder recommended Joe Gibbs Hotrod oil, Mobil 1 15w50, and/or Amsoil 20w50. I'd take his word any day. However, I think these are synthetic (not to mention they start at $8.50 a qrt.), which, I'd rather use mineral based. Anyway, I think I'm going to look into that Valvoline oil (thanks POR).
You might look at Shell Rotella T -after break in- as well.
It's marketed as a diesel oil, but is higher in ZDDP than Spark Ignition (SI) rated oils.
I saw the 15W40 in Walmart last week for under $12 a gallon.
FWIW, I don't know what kind of spring pressure you're running and have no experience with flat tappets in a 460, but it works well in my truck, bikes & 347" solid roller.
I use Brad Penn (The Green Oil) for break-in for it's high level of zddp. I continue to run the same oil in 15W40 in my big block 402 since it provides me with good oil pressure. Brad Penn oil was recomended by a local race shop in my area.
