Picking a gear ratio depends on many factors.

Are you hauling stuff or running empty?

Where do you drive the most, City or Hiway?

What kind of terrain, flat land or hills?

What gears do you have now? and why do you want to change?

There is a similar thread for some one with a 223 wanting to use a 3.00 or 3.25 rear end. I would think that the 240 would have problems pulling out and it would be hard on the clutch, too. The general recommendation was a rear end with a 3.50 or larger would probably work best. I have a 1964 f100 with a 223 engine and a 4.11 rear end and am going to stick with it for a while. It's definitely not a highway cruiser, but its ok for light driving and getting around. I'm sure some of the guys here can give you advise on the 240 and what rear ends they are using. Best of Luck.

My 66 with 300 had a 3.5 behind it. It had plenty of get up and go from the stop sign but on the highway it wasn't much fun. I've owned 3 different 300s but never a 240. Your probably not much different than the 223 described in another thread.
