We just purchased a 1985 F-150 XL 4wd with a 300 6-cylinder 1bbl. and a 4sp. manual trans. It did not have the owners manual with it. We are needing the fluid capacities for this truck, specifically to start with, the engine oil capacity.
Also, as this is a base level F-150, can the OEM bench seat be swapped out for captains chairs from a 1980-1991 Ford Bronco without bolting modifications? Reason being, we want to install an equipment and comm. console that can clear the stick-shift.
Your truck takes 6 quartz of engine oil with the filter. The manual specifies 5w-30 in areas w/ temps consistently below zero F. I'm in Phoenix, AZ and have been using 10W-30.

I would start with 5 quarts when changing the oil (not putting any in the filter itself), then let it sit for about 10-20 minutes to let all the oil get to the oil pan, then check your level and add til the dipstick shows it's in the safe area. After it's in the safe area, start the engine and let the oil circulate for a minute or two, then turn it off and after another 10-20 minutes, check the oil level again (it will have dropped from the filter having been filled with oil), and add oil til you're in the safe zone again.
I used to run 30w for a while, but I eventually switched to Shell Rotella T 15w40 non-synthetic. It's tough stuff, it's made for heavy-duty diesels, but works in gas engines too.
