I just got this truck a month ago. The previous owner used it as a commuter (he's my boss) and sold it to me to get a 2010.
4WD. How do I tell if it's actually in 4WD? My last truck was a Dodge with a manual transfer case.
I think it may be stuck in 4WD. The dash light goes on and off like it should when I turn the ****, but there's no audible clunk and I don't feel a difference. Hubs are in AUTO.
NOTE. My fuel economy has went from 17.5 MPG to 14.3 MPG since I first turned the 4WD **** (to 4 high, never 4 low). I don't recall if there was an audible clunk that first time, either.
someone else who has electronic shift will chime in here but does your ac come out defrost? this is a tell tale sign. you can find a hill to back up to get hopefully your back wheels to spin. if its unlocked you should be able to reach under and move your front u joints. if its locked in you can't move. just a few ideas.
I'm glad i got a manual shift. never fails well almost never i hope
Well, bollocks! I just went out in a wet, grassy area to test it. I am an idiot. Got stuck in the mud. Had the door open to see if the front wheel was spinning (which it wasn't) and got mud in the cab. Ended up manually locking the hubs and it worked. So, to me, it's really not a problem anymore as I appear to be stuck in 2WD unless I manually lock the hubs. I will fix the issue, but I'm glad I'm in 2WD.
Muddy back, muddy hair, muddy door panel, muddy shoes, happy me.
I should have stated earlier. It's a 2004 F250 Crew Cab 6.0 diesel 4X4

The truck has to be moving for the ESOF to engage. If you did not engage the 4x4 before you got stuck then you would have to turn the hubs manually to the locked position and the **** on dash to 4x4.
You would have known if it was in 4WD. It would have bound on turns. Looks like you need to fix the vacuum but you need to clean/grease the locking hubs first.
With some trucks more than others. I can barely here the transfer case engage even with my door open, it is just a click. You won't hear the vacuum part (I assume it is ESOF) and it should be put in 4WD while you are rolling anyway.
I'll look into it further tomorrow. It's sounding like there's nothing wrong with it at all, and I should have engaged it before coming to a complete stop.
I'm not up to par on the acronyms yet, but it's the dash switch system which, I assume, is ESOF.
Thanks for all the help, guys.

Electronic Shift On Fly. (dash control) Some people switch to manual hubs but I like my ESOF.
