my father in law has a 92 ranger xlt 4wd 4cyl 5speed.. anyway, from first gear to third theres an awful grinding sound, doesnt make noise with clutch in when shifting, 4th gear rolls smooth and fifth fine also.. there doesnt seem to be any power loss... whats going on with this thing?
i'm just going to see if i can't find him a comanche or a jtruck...it would be easier finding info on maintaining and fixing jeeps..a jeep mj is right up there with a ranger, right? i hear the ones with 4.0 last like 300,000 miles
Check the transmission lube level. It sounds as if the bearings in the counter gear have gone out, or the lube is low. Fourth and fifth gears do not use the counter gear to transmit power, so there is no load on it, nor the bearings. Some Ranger transmissions had rubber plugs on the upper side that deteriorated over time and allowed the lube to slowly leak out.
If you want to talk jeep, you are on the wrong site. Rangers can and do go further than 300k, and it takes a lot of desire to destroy a 2.3/2.5.
thanks tom i appreciate your help... my first vehicle was an 85 ranger 2wd and it had over 300k on it before i sold it for 1000bucks.. i run an xj myself now and see built rangers on the trail.. but for now my father in law has the truck im trying to help him fix... again, i do appreciate the help. i'll post up if it works
