new injectors

Friend of mine wants to put new injectors in his 96 7.3L. He has already purchased a set of 150 HP injectors. Will he need to reprogram his truck for this upgrade? I know a upgraded HPOP would be beneficial but will it be neccessary to make the new injectors work correctly? would a new stock hpop do the trick?

to put it simply, yes, you will not see nearly the full potential of the new injectors with out the right tunning. the buttometer will be off the charts and possibly the egts aswell

If you can please elaborate on the injectors. who made them, stage I or II, nozzle size?, etc.

Also what mods to the truck. Chip? what chip? etc...

wish i could elaborate, but i know nothing about the injectors other than that they are supposed to be 150hp. The engine in the truck is a IH remanufactered eng. with 36000 miles. It is completely unmodified other than a strait pipe. I wouldn't worry about changing the injectors if it wasn't for the fact that he already bought the injectors. Would an off the shelf tuner do the trick for reprogramming or would it be necessary to get a programmer or module w/tunes for bigger injectors, such as DP or TS performance.

The off-the-shelf stuff plays it very safe. You will only see so much power becasue of this. They work great for stock trucks, but not so great when you bump up injector flow.
Go with a custom chip from DP, PHP, TW etc as they focus on squeezing every last drop of power from these motors, with modified injectors.

TS, Bully Dog, Banks, etc are desinged for the masses, the custom guys are for us.

Also if he's doing Injectors and a chip to run them he should definately upgrade the intake and get a bigger downpipe.

6637 intake mod and a good 3" downpipe are a must to get good performance out of these trucks

From what I have read on here is that he will need to upgrade the HPOP to at least a 17* that used on 99.5 - 03 7.3 superdutys. There are also aftermarket versions, a few options from diesel site to name one place. Maybe the reman engine came with the upgraded 17* but that is something important to know. I don't believe the stock 15* pump can put out the volume of oil needed to run the injectors at the higer rpm with a chip. It will probably throw a code about low oil volume or pressure.

Yep a bigger HPOP may be in the future.

I don't think he'll need to do it immediately. I would do the injectors and tune and drive it to find out. The stocker may be good enough for how he uses the truck. Heavy towing or WOT runs may throw a CEL.

I put stage 2's (180hp) in and my 15* will run them. I've thrown one CEL and it was at the 140 hp setting showing off. Obviously a bigger one will even be better and I'm going to upgrade when the money is around again. But you can work up to it.

Hey Jim, didn't I read somewhere that you're a PHP dealer now?

Depends if either thruck is the CA model with AB Splits, or if they are AA Singles. They had some '96 & '97 with the AB for CA purchase. Just make sure you both have the same code injectors.

thanks dzljim. i want these injectors so that i can send them in to have them built to stage ones and then probably sell mine after they are installed. some guy is selling the whole truck for a decent price. the truck is a 91 with a 97 powerstroke transplant that was running but he removed the wiring harness to put on his 97 f350. hope i can get to it before someone beats me to it.

hey i thought that obs trucks didnt come out with a f350 cc short bed? you got some pics of it?
