Went to change the transfer case fluid today and drained out 3 quarts. Filled it up with 2 and it was just coming out the filler hole. Manual also says 2 quart capacity.
It was a 1 owner with 96000 miles when I bought it (always dealer serviced). No way the previous owner touched it. Did it come this way from the factory? Hard for even a dealer to get 3 quarts in there when it starts running back out at 2 quarts.
It is possible they were overfilled by the factory, anything is possible. It almost seems more likely than transference between the trans and t-case. The transmission has an output shaft seal, and the t-case has a input shaft seal. Both would have to fail in order for the fluid to move from one place to the other. Your trans would also show a qt low if this had happened. If the trans seal was bad it is more likely that it would have leaked out between the two components onto the ground than forced its way inside the t-case.
Funny thing when I bought the truck last fall it was a little low on tranny fluid (1/2 quart) so I added some. Then this spring it was a little low again. Don't see a leak anywhere so you may be right.
