Adding a Fuel Door?

I have a 95 F250 that has had the bed replace previous to my buying the truck, but problem is that the bed used has only the rear tank fuel door, and I have dual tanks. They ran the fuel fill into the wheel into the fender well above and forward of the tire, luckily it has a 4" lift. I am going to add a door for the front tank in the correct locaton. I went to a local salvage yard and found a donor truck. Question is, when I weld the new part in, would I be best to just but weld the joints, or I thought about cutting some narrow backer strips and using them to minimize blow through, which would be best? Only worry about the backer strips is that they would add an extra place for rust to start. I am running a 150 Hobart mig with gas, and know that I need to keep the bead lengths short to minimize warping. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
TC

I have done this many times , A butt weld is the best way for lack of future rust ,, stitch the weld 1/4 to 1/2 inch at a time ,& immediately cool it with an air gun , grind (if you can ) and clean the inside & coat it with something to seal it ...
