ZF trans question

Hello,
I have a 1990 F250 4x4 with the ZF 5 speed. While removing the transmission to install a new clutch yesterday, I noticed two rectangular holes at the top of the bellhousing. These holes were open. My question is this; are these holes supposed to be plugged from the factory-just opened for inspecting the clutch? Or are they for cooling the clutch? I believe these holes helped my clutch fail because of letting in sand and mud while mudding the truck. If there are not any factory plugs, would it be wise to plug off these holes to keep mud and sand out? Thanks for looking.

They are open for cooling purposes. Make a screen to block out the big chunks

thanks, thats a good idea. I was thinking of blocking them off totally. I think a screen my be a better option.
