If I had to guess...You might be running 3.73's. So...going to the 4.88's will certainly keep your tranny happy.
1) Find out what ratio you have (easiest to hardest)
a) read tag on rear
b) read tag on front axle or stamped # ( see Dana Bill of Materials ) and send me your BoM #
c) Divide ring gear tooth count by pinion tooth count
2) Run calculator for actual ratio & OEM tire size - record both direct drive & overdrive results.
3) Run calculator for possible ratios & current (or desired) tire size - record both direct drive & overdrive results.
4) Heavy tires may need higher RPM than OEM. If in doubt ask!
5) Make sure ratio you want is available for both axles!

Or just look at the axle code on the drivers door jamb...
FWIW at 75mph I am well over 3k rpm in 3rd (1:1) with 3.73s and 33's. I think if you regear the truck to 4.88s you will be much happier with the way the truck performs. The 99' NonPI motor isn't as much of a revver as the PI 2v and 3V is so you might be better off with 4.88s. 4.88s and 38.5" tires will give you an effective ratio of around 4.05 and 5.13s and 38.5" tires is around 4.26.
Like I posted up above 4.88s with 38.5s will be about 4.05 gears and 5.13s will be about 4.26. (with stock 32" tires) Going with 5.13s will give you the most power to the ground but they will be really turning at 70mph and making some heat. I'd recommend getting a finned aluminum cover for the rear diff either the 08' ford diesel cover or a mag hytec to keep heat down. I would get ahold of Teamudd here on FTE he has a lots of experience with big tires and gearing on the V10 trucks and he could tell you better than I could as far as the pros and cons of the two gearsets.
are you running 2500 rpms @ 75mph in D (3rd gear)? if so then YES you have 3.73's ( i would put money on it)! on OD (4th you'd be at about 1700rpm @ 75mph.......)
the V10 isn't afraid of rpms'....... your focal point is around 2000-2300 rpm's the closer you get your cruising rpm's to the sweet spot the better the drive... my excursion cruises at 2000 rpms at 60mph with stock tires and factory 4.30 gears.
with 4.88's you'll be at about 1800rpm's @ 60mph , 2300rpm's @ 75mph
with 5.13's you'll be at about 1900rpm's @ 60mph , 2400rpm's @ 75mph
with 5.38's you'll be at about 2000rpm's @ 60mph , 2500rpm's @ 75mph
now these are just estimates, but its a darn close area of where you'll be at. personally i'm a 60mph cruiser....... i cruse 60mph towing or empty so that is the mph i focus on and determine what rpm i'd be at.
ya sounds like your right on the money with that. thanks for all the help think i'm gonna go with the 4.88 just have to find a shop thats not gonna rape me
