Okay guys i know this is probably unheard of but i am doing a restoration on my 1994 Ford F150 4x4 Extended Cab. This Truck has alot of sentimental Value to my wife and I. It brought my wife to our wedding and it was her step fathers before i bought it. Anyways instead of posting lots of threads asking about each individual part i am going to make this one big thread to ask what is the best brand to replace each one with. Now here is my objective to make my truck be a dependable and capable 4x4 truck which will be used manily to be a daily driver but to also be used in 4x4 in the winter when my wife's parents need fire wood or when my parents are trapped back in their home and need rescued (like this year with the ice storm). My plan is not only to stop rust but to prevent it from forming on the frame and body by spraying the bed with a bed liner. Under coating the bottom of the bed and cab. also either powercoating or bedliner on the entire frame. Any ways here goes a list of parts i am going to replace and if you could give me your opinons on what to replace them with. I really think that motocraft is the best parts to use on our ford trucks but maybe i am wrong thats why i am measuring the truck so to speak 10 times and only cutting once as opposed to cutting 10 times and only measuring once. welp here is my list and i want to thank each of you for helping me as i go forth in my project and a special thanks to conanski, ed@y2kparts.com, lew52 and the rest of the guys on the forum for giving me the courage to start the project.
okay here is the list of parts. As i said i am planning first then doing.
Brakes
Rotors
Hubs
Shocks (Bilistein)
Springs
Wheel Bearings
U Joints
Gas Lines
Brake Lines
Stainless Steel Dual Exhaust
Catalitic Converter
Headers(long Tube)
Tie Rods
Engine Change (351W)
Fluid Change in both Axle's (thinking Royal purple or Lucas still not sure)
Axle Rebuild (if Needed)
Transmisson Rebuild (if Needed)
Transmisson Cooler
Transfer Case (rebuild and replacement if needed)
Possable Rear Drum to Disk Conversion(having trouble finding a all in one kit)
Okay thats a start i know i want to replace the tie rods but at this point i dont really remember what else needs to be replaced with the tie rod ends. Also like i said i was thinking of motorcraft parts but if you guys think another brand is better let me know. I want this truck to last awhile and be dependable. thanks
don't get motorcraft parts, get the expensive moog parts for your steering componets
how much power are you looking for what is your budget
when you say a capable 4x4 truck i am thinking at least 35in tires on it with at least 400hp
now you say you want traction on ice-mud terrain tires are terrible on hard packed snow and ice but all terrains are good on hard packed snow and ice
with the bigger tires you will want 4.56 gears at least if you want it to be capable offroad
as for brakes i have the ebc drilled and slotted roters with the green stuff offroad pads and man i LOVE my brakes i can outstop almost anything on the road! and that's with stock stuff out back
as far as hubs stay away from superwinch that's what i have and i hate them, i have heard warn premium hubs are really good though there is no plastic on them to break
as for shocks and springs just get them when you order your lift kit i like my procomp shocks but have heard really good things about king shocks for offroad and bilsteins for the road but the procomp are a compromise between the two (and cheaper than both)
as for u-joints dont get greasable u-joints- with 400+ horsepower you WILL break the greasable u-joints get the superstrength non greasable ones and just accept that you will have to replace them at least twice a year if you submerge them in water
for fuel lines i used all -an braided stainless steel line from russell they sell an adaptor that will clip onto your gas tank return line and pressure line as well as the fuel filter and fuel rail (if you keep fuel injection)
as for a trans cooler i run three on my truck the stock one in the radiator, a b&m aluminum one, and a tci cooler all mounted to my radiator
ballistic fabrication (www.ballisticfabrication.com) makes really good coil overs-a buddy runs them on his 700hp chevy sittin on 44in boggers and loves them
Thanks for the response. Sorry i should of been more clear. what i mean by capable 4x4 is that it will be depenable and able to take up some of the gravel roads my parents and her parents live on as well as be able to haul anything i need. I dont do any wheeling or mudding basically i just drive it. I dont plan on lifting it or going to 35 inch tires. My plans at this point are 31x10.5R15 All Terrain tires I really like the way my truck drives with the 3.55ls gear ratio and it does fine the way it is in 4x4 but like i said in an earlier post its been rode hard by my step father in law. I Guess i am really just going a step above stock. as far as horse power i dont know what the 351w will make with longtube headers and a couple other performance mods but since i am replacing the engine i decided instead of putting the 302 back in i would go to the 351w from what i understand my computer(mass air flow) will run the 351 without any modifications.
Stock you are looking at about 200-220hp from that 351W if you are rebuilding it to stock. Dished pistons with smog heads and a stock cam. However if you are rebuilding this 351w and want to spend some extra cash for some performance heads, cam, intake, roller rockers, pistons, 30# injectors, maybe a stroker kit. you would be pushing the 350-400+ range and beyond depending on the level of performance parts you put in.
As far as all the other parts just keep in mind you get what you pay for. Dont go with the cheapest price because youll get what you ask for. I dont know what kind of budget you have but at least hit somewhere in the middle range when looking at price ranges on the parts for your resto project.
