I had the belt come off the other day so I put a new belt on. What a pain in the *** that was. I looked at it again the other day and it had started to come off one of the bottom pulleys. So I fixed it and put it back and drove it a little while and it had started coming off the same pulley again. After looking at it appears that the tensioner pulley is crooked. I'm figureing this is what is causing the belt to come since the pulley that its coming off is the one right below the tensioer. Anyone have any ideas what would cause this and how hard is it to replace. ANy help is greatly appreciated.
Takes about 20 minutes, and is easier with 4 hands. Remove the belt, remove the tensioner, install a new tensioner, and install the belt. And it is quite common, also on the 7.3 as well.
Save your self some time in the future and change your tensioner, the idler pulleys, and belt at the same time and you will get a lot longer life out of your fan belt. If you don't you will be back in their again sooner than you want. A little preventative maintenance will pay off in the long run. They may look good now but everything fails eventually.
How hard is it to change the tensioner? Do you need to pull anything special off to get it to it. I know its a pain in the *** to see. Thanks for all your help.
There are 2 idler pulleys if you have one alternator and 3 pulleys if you have dual alternators. Once you get the belt loose you can get to the pulleys. It is a little tricky but if you are patient it's not to bad. On the single alt one pulley is smooth and the other is grooved, pay attention and don't mix them up. Have fun.
Most times it is the bearing in the pulley on the tensioner that is gone. I havn't changed one on the ford diesel before, but the ones I have the pulley is bolted to the tensioner.
Saves a lot of money to just replace the pulleys..And as big a pain as these are to get to I would replace all the idlers along with the tension pulley as suggested earlier.
