Which oil do you use?

So I have been trying to figure out what oil I'm gonna use this winter. As per the diesel supplement we're not supposed to use 15W40 oil when it gets below 20 degrees.

So when I was figuring how much more it'd cost to maintain when I bought it I was planning on using the 5-quart $12 jugs of Motorcraft 15W40. Since I just need three of them, I'd be spending less than $40 on oil for an oil change. Pricey filter, but at $60 out the door for parts, it's still cheap to maintain. But now I'm thinking this is inadequate for cold weather.

The next best thing I can find is the 4-quart jugs of Rotella synthetic for $19. Since there's only 4 quarts, I'd need 4 of them which would cost over $80 with sales tax, just for the oil. Seems a bit steep considering it's just a cold weather requirement.

The manual also suggests Motorcraft 10W30 CJ-4 diesel oil in the cold weather, but I can't find it at wal-mart or the parts store, which leads me to believe that it's a $5 a quart dealer item which I'm not gonna pay for. Anyone know if anyone sells the big jugs of this stuff cheap?

What do you guys use in the winter?

What about an international dealer???, or NAPA has truck parts, in the truck parts store... There is one here on Gilchrist Rd in Akron, if you ever make it up here...

I'd check a international dealer and see if they have it.

Good idea with the International dealer, there are several here in Columbus.

Mustang, your suggestion brought back some memories...the last company I worked for had a drop yard up on Gilchrist road...

Rotella here 15/40. Never gets much cooler than 20F in our area...if that. The rest of the years is just varying levels of HOT.

I also run Motorcraft 15w40 and the last 4 winters I have purchased Motorcraft 10w30 from the dealer and it was $4 something a quart. Rotella makes a 10w30 that my local Wal Mart carries so I think I'm going to try that this winter.

I use synthetic in mine and have not had any issues. There are apparently some posts where guys DO NOT recommend synthetic in the 6.4 but I can't see what difference it would make. I run it simply because temperatures where I live can dip to -45C (-49F for you in the south) and anything that is easier on the truck during cold starts is worth it to me. I still plug it but at that temperature every little bit helps.

If 15W-40 is not to be used under 20 F, then I would think 10W-30 should not be used below 0 F.

Wholly crap, Ford even issued bulletins and instructed dealers to get the 15W-40 out of the units sitting on the lot in those types of temperatures.
The older diesels have a measure of safety with the 15W-40 because they won't start at those temperatures.

For the record there are only two viscosities International approves in the 6.4 above 50 F; 15W-40 and 5W-40.
The only vicosities allowed below 0 F are 5W-40, 0W-30 and 0W-40 and a block heater is required below -10 F with those.

And; "To prevent engine damage, use the correct SAE viscosity grade oil for recommended temperature ranges."

I have 7000kms on my '09 and just did the oil 1000kms ago. I changed it to Rotella T 15W40 and am planning on switching to a synthetic 5W40 later in December when the temps drop and I have a few extra miles on the truck as I believe it should be broken in a little more before switching to a synthetic.

My question is does anyone have anything negative to say about Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5W40 synthetic? I can purchase this for about 1/3 the cost of Rotella. I have always used Rotella synthetic in my diesel trucks (and in some of my other small engines) and never had any issues with it.

I still think with the price of the filters and the amount of oil used it is cheap insurance in a vehicle that costs this much. For the amount I spend on fuel between oil changes, the price of the oil change is marginal.

Cheers,

Dale

Not cheap, but I run Mobil One 5-40 year round. Local car part stores finally got the Turbo truck CJ-4 stuff around here. Use some version of Mobil One in all my vehicles. Figure it's cheap insurance...

Im in Ohio too and we can see a day in January be 50 degrees or it can be 10 below. Heck I have almost seen that kind of swing in a single day. LOL
I use the Rotella 5W40 synthetic because its approved for all temp ranges that my truck will ever see and its still approved for towing. I believe they tell you not to use the 10W30 for towing or above 50 degrees (or something like that, dont have manual in front of me).
I can tell you that the synthetic makes a difference on start up for those cold mornings. My 6.0 was an angry customer for the first couple of minutes with 15W40. Switched to 5W40 and it sounds a LOT better on initial start up (below 20 degrees) even with it plugged in.
The only synthetic horror stories I have heard were about Amsoil. I have not heard any bad stories about Rotella or Mobil 1 synthetic in the 6.4. I dont know if the Valvoline is rated/accepted for the 6.4, never looked.
