Changes to the classified ad system

LAST EDITED ON 28-Feb-01 AT 11:15 AM (EST)[p]As many of your are aware "dot com" companies have been hit hard in the last few months. FTE is now feeling the effects. Our ad revenues through our reseller have taken a serious hit and have plunged by 80%. FTE is taking steps to insulate itself from the advertising slowdown.

Many of you have enjoyed the use of our bandwidth with free classifieds. As is the case with many web sites, the free lunch is over. Our classifieds use a significant amount of bandwidth per month and we have to come up with new revenue sources in order to keep FTE operational. Thus, we're implementing a >>reasonable fee<< for placing an ad.

The classified ads will now be $4.00 for up to 45 days plus an additional $1.00 for each additional category you place it in. After placing your ad you will be given a link to a page on our secure server to pay for the ad.

Our classifieds have over 75,000 visitors per month and this number grows every month. $4.00 for that kind of exposure represents a tremendous value. Anyone who thinks $4.00 is too much to pay ought to consider the thousands I've shelled out to keep the site operational and the need to continue to keep the site going.

Thank you for your understanding as we implement this change. It's unavoidable given the current economic climate.

Ken, First of all let me thank you for keeping FTE up and running. I don't post and respond as much as a lot of people, but I have gleaned an encyclopedic amount of information from the knowledge and experience of others on this site. There is no way to repay for all the "free" info that I have recieved.
if you are not able to generate enough revenue through charging for classified ads, do you forsee a time in the near future for charging for general access to FTE??

No, I do not have any plans to charge for the boards. The community is the heart of the site and I would not put a knife in that. The classified ads aren't the only source for additional revenue. We're branching out and will have several new products in our store (about 300 new products) next week.

Ken, I din't see why anyone would have a problem with that idea. You can't go to the AutoShopper or Deals on Wheels and post free ads. You do a big service here and asking for a little compensation is no problem in my book. Thanks!

Sounds like a good plan to me. Who can complain about that? To put an ad in the local paper here it is 8 bucks and it doesn't get near theexposure that one here would.

Hi, if I need to use the classified ads I would have no problem paying to use them you have to pay for any classified ad anywhere. even on e-bay you pay so if it helps keep the board alive then by all means go for it!!!! Keep up the good work Ken.

I have no problem with it.I think it will weed out bogus people selling pure crap on there too.Might boost the moral of the classifieds. We will jast have to raise our asking prices by 5 bucks or so to make up for it and it still helps the site out!
That'll work.
